Board Readiness Program

IN-PERSON AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA CAMPUS
March 4–5, 2027

The Board Readiness Program prepares senior marketing leaders to become effective corporate directors and trusted advisors in the boardroom.

Delivered in partnership with The CMO Institute and the Culverhouse College of Business, the program combines academic research, governance best practices, and insights from experienced board members to help participants develop the knowledge, perspective, and professional positioning required to pursue and succeed in board service.

Designed for accomplished executives, the program helps participants translate expertise in leadership, strategy, branding, customer insight, data, and innovation into enterprise-level governance and shareholder value creation.

This program is designed for experienced executives who are interested in pursuing corporate board service or strengthening their effectiveness as current directors.

Participants will:

  • Develop an understanding of corporate governance, fiduciary responsibilities, and the role of directors in creating long-term shareholder value.
  • Learn how expertise in strategy, branding, customer insight, data, and innovation can contribute to board-level decision making.
  • Explore complex governance issues involving risk management, reputation, executive leadership, and enterprise performance.
  • Gain practical guidance on pursuing and securing board opportunities, including executive positioning, director recruitment, and boardroom communication.
  • Build meaningful relationships with fellow executives, faculty, corporate directors, and governance experts.

 

Format

The program will be hosted on campus at The University of Alabama’s Culverhouse College of Business.

Participants should plan to be on campus from approximately 1:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on March 4 and 8:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. on March 5. A finalized schedule will be provided prior to the program.

The experience combines faculty-led instruction, case studies, panel discussions, boardroom simulations, and peer networking opportunities. Participants will also attend an executive networking reception on the evening of March 4 designed to foster meaningful connections with fellow executives, faculty, corporate directors, and governance experts.

This program is not eligible for federal financial aid. No academic credit will be awarded.

With an MA in Public Relations and PhD in Communication and Information Sciences, Dr. Alexa Chilcutt is the faculty lead for the Executive Business Communication and co-lead for the Academy of Women in Leadership programs at Johns Hopkins Carey Business School.

Additionally, Alexa provides training for TCU Neeley Business School’s Executive Education program and The University of Alabama Executive Education and EMBA programs. Topics include business communication, executive presence, and executive presentation skills. 

Corporate clients have included Exelon Corporation, Constellation Energy, Hoya Corporation, Prometric, Brinker International, Allstate, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama, German-based company igus, and Johns Hopkins International Medicine Concierge Services.

Publications include “Engineered to Speak: Helping You Create and Deliver Engaging Technical Presentations” published by Wiley IEEE PCS Professional Engineering Communication Series with Dr. Adam Brooks, and articles featured in Workplace Health & Safety, MedEdPORTAL, Journal of American Dental Association (JADA), Association of General Dentist’s “Impact” magazine, Public Relations Journal, and Georgia Academy of General Dentistry’s Explorer magazine.
